What you should know...This group of former 3rd graders are moving on to 7th grade next year! I am so proud of their many accomplishments so far in their young lives. In 2019, Central Noble implemented project-based learning, and this group combined that hands-on learning with our CN Reads Together book work, raising over $200 (in an hour-and-a-half!) for the Lemonade War fundraiser, proceeds of which were given to a local family for medical expenses. Together we can make a difference in the lives of others, one student, one family, and one community at a time!

WHAT'S NEXT?
What 5th Graders Need |
5th Grade is the final year in a student's intermediate level elementary education. He or she should have a solid grasp on basic mathematical concepts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and should now be reading to learn, not learning to read. Standardized testing becomes more rigorous at this level, and students continue to deepen the levels of their knowledge of math strategies, analysis, reasoning, and critical thinking. Foundational phonics and comprehension skills should be well-ingrained by the middle to end of 3rd or 4th grade, so by 5th grade, students should be ready to understand and communicate their ideas and thoughts regarding the topics, characters and situations they are reading about. Students should be able to apply historical concepts to modern day dilemmas. They will be expected to collaborate, work actively in groups (as well as independently), and present and explain projects in both written and spoken form to not only adults, but to their peers. Discussion & debate are often used in our classroom as a means of understanding, learning, and sharing ideas. Students in our classroom will continue to learn use technology responsibly and become more familiar with it as a learning tool (rather than a gaming system), and will be held to high standards with regard to attendance, character, and conduct.
As you can see, 5th grade is a highly transitional and transformational for students. So what, exactly, does your fifth grader (and his or her teacher) need from you? They need consistency, support, positive encouragement & consequences, and modeling morality and common decency toward others. Most importantly, they need to know how much you believe in their overall development and growth academically, socially, emotionally, and morally. Children should know and believe that extra effort, positivity, mutual respect, and perseverance on their part will lead to their success. It is my job to teach your children... but I cannot do it without your help and support! |
