"Becoming a strong reader begins at birth. The cornerstones of reading success - language, knowledge, and curiosity - should be cultivated from infancy, and in every setting." ~Nonie K. Lesaux, Ph.D., Turning the Page
Our core reading comprehension and vocabulary scope and sequence come from Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts.
We are moving to a new and exciting curriculum this year called Amplify CKLA in all grades K-5! I am thrilled to be able to introduce and work through this curriculum with your children, as it embraces all of the best reading, vocabulary, spelling, language, and writing strategies with 1 unit of traditional classic children's tales and 10 units of science and social studies based topics your that will stir the hearts and minds of everyone in some way. The Amplify CKLA website states that their curriculum "invites students to dig deeper across content areas and make connections." I agree! Check out the topics we'll be covering:
The 11 units covered this year, from the Amplify CKLA Instruction Guide.
Students will begin their year listening to the classic tale The Wind in the Willows. We will explore all the aspects of fiction reading learned from kindergarten through 2nd grade and will dive deep into the underlying meaning of the story and how it is applied to the world today.
After that we move on to study the human body systems, light and sound, and the cultures of Native Americans, the ancient Romans, and the Vikings. We will explore the universe and solar system, as well as the founding of our country and the plants and animals that live here. Your students are in for a great year of exploring the world around them! Vocabulary, spelling, and writing will all be tied to these studies, making transition from one subject to another seamless and natural rather than a random act which doesn't tie to anything else.
